Chapter Nine

“We are fucked. We are so fucked. Are you sure your leg is broken?”

Kraigan growled and bared his teeth, but Jason couldn’t make himself shut up.

“No, right, that’s definitely bone. I see bone. God, it’s so gross,” Jason said, turning away from the injured dragon shifter on the cold ground to have a look through the bushes where they hid.

He didn’t see anyone, but the distant howl made his skin crawl.

“What was that? More hunting dogs?”

When he looked, Kraigan’s mouth was a thin line, the flesh of his skin as pale as the two moons in the sky, and he looked ten years older.

“Worse. Werewolves.”

“What?” Jason asked, a shiver crawling up his spine as he turned back toward where the noise had come from. “Seriously? What the hell?”

“Didn’t your village ever protect itself against them?”

“Only on a double full moon.”

Kraigan rolled his eyes, a nasty growl escaping his lips. “Look into the sky, you fool.”

“What? But I thought—” Jason turned up, saw one moon and then the other, both in different spots in the sky, so he hadn’t noticed them right off the bat. He for sure hadn’t been looking for that detail when he’d been kidnapped out of the bedroom he shared with the other human men and dragged out of the nest and down the side of the mountain as though he was the day’s catch or something.

He knew there was one full moon up there, but whenever he looked up in the other direction and saw another one, he supposed that it was just the same one.

“I guess…I didn’t realize how bright it was out here tonight.”

Kraigan grumbled again and rolled his eyes. He looked pretty beat up as he sat against the tree, his leg broken and part of the bone sticking out and…ugh. Jason needed to stop looking at that. He was going to be sick.

Wait a minute. Kraigan just said something. Something not so great. “What the hell did you just say?”

Kraigan snarled at him. “I said you need to go without me. I can buy you some time. You know the way.”

“I’m not just going to leave you here!” Jason yelled, the words spewing from his mouth like hot vomit. Sudden and without warning. He nearly shocked himself, not with his words but with the force at which he’d said them.

As much as Jason didn’t like this guy, he didn’t ever want to be the kind of asshole who just left him behind to die.

Kraigan’s eyes narrowed, and he stared at Jason with as much distrust in his eyes as if he thought Jason would transform into a wild and enraged werewolf himself and start with the biting and slashing and killing. “Why wouldn’t you leave me?”

Jason opened his mouth to yell again, just to realize he had nothing to say. “I…I don’t know. That’s not right. I’m not going to leave you to die. What do you think I am?”

Kraigan shook his head, mouth twisting as he turned away. “You’re just wasting both of our time then.
